I’m new to web scraping and want to test my scripts without putting unnecessary pressure on websites or getting my IP blocked.
I understand the basics: datacenter proxies are usually cheap, residential proxies may be more reliable, and mobile proxies can be expensive. But I’m unsure which one makes sense for a beginner on a reasonable budget.
What proxy type would you recommend for small, permission-aware scraping projects, and what should I look for before choosing a provider?
For most beginner projects, start with a reputable datacenter proxy. It is usually the cheapest and fastest option for easier public pages.
If a target consistently blocks it, test a small rotating residential plan for that specific site. Residential proxies are often a better all-around option for more protected sites, but there is no need to pay for them everywhere.
Mobile proxies are usually overkill unless your authorized workflow genuinely requires mobile network traffic, such as testing mobile experiences.
Whichever option you choose, use a modest request rate, cache results, and follow the site’s terms and robots guidance. A proxy helps with routing, but it cannot make aggressive scraping sustainable.
